    New project set to bolster Brazils forest policies

    A new project executed by FAO and the Brazilian Forest Service should help Brazil improve its forest policies and decision making by a number of stakeholders. The project, entitled “Strengthening National Policy and information Framework in Support of Sustainable Management of Brazil’s Forest Resources”, might be funded by GEF for a 5-year period and aims to supply improved analyses and knowledge on forest resources and land use.

MA&D aims to help rural people in developing enterprises that generate and improve incomes, while also sustainably using and managing forest and other natural resources. Local community who’re most depending on forest resources are the choice makers during the MA&D process, from the planning and financing to the sustainable management and operation in their enterprises. This ownership of the method signifies that local community also tips on how to develop their very own business plans, leading in turn to higher investment preparedness. This manual is the results of ten years of learning and input from partners who’ve implemented the approach across Africa, Asia and Latin America because the first version was released in 2000.

    Protecting Mongolias forests: Video

    Almost 12% of Mongolia is roofed by forests, providing important resources for folks and wildlife. Through a participatory forest management pilot project in 5 provinces, area people have received training on forest assessment, marketing of forest products, management planning, mapping and fire prevention. Funded by the Royal Government of the Netherlands and implemented by FAO during the Mongolian Ministry of Nature and Environment, this project has successfully reduced illegal logging, hunting and enabled more sustainable management of community woodland resources.
